Pas vanaf de doorbraak van <strong>machine learning (ML)<\/strong> in het tweede decennium van de 21ste-eeuw, heeft AI praktische toepassingen opgeleverd voor consumenten, bedrijven en overheden. Denk aan chat-bots, gezichtsherkenning, spraakherkenning, automatisch vertalen, zelfrijdende auto\u2019s en lerende robots. AI-toepassingen worden nu razendsnel uitgerold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/differences-1-1024x585.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/differences-1-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/differences-1-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/differences-1-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/differences-1.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Omdat AI het in zich heeft alle sectoren van onze maatschappij te be\u00efnvloeden en grote sociaal-economische gevolgen zal hebben, voelen veel landen de noodzaak om hier beleid op te ontwikkelen (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrr.nl\/binaries\/wrr\/documenten\/working-papers\/2019\/06\/12\/internationaal-ai-beleid\/WP_34_Internationaal+AI+beleid+WEB.pdf\">Mols, WRR Internationaal AI-beleid, 2019<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#3f90b3;text-align:right\" class=\"has-background\">AI is het deel van de informatica dat zich<br> richt op systemen die functies uitvoeren die<br> we normaal gesproken associ\u00ebren met het<br> menselijk brein, zoals, leren, omgaan met<br> onduidelijkheid, problemen oplossen, emoties<br> herkennen en zelfs creatief zijn (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vno-ncw.nl\/sites\/default\/files\/aivnl_20181106_0.pdf\">www.vno-ncw.nl<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alan Turing\u00a0kan worden beschouwd als de grondlegger van de praktische interpretatie voor het theoretische concept van intelligente machines. Deze Britse wiskundige\/logicus publiceerde in 1950 een paper\u00a0getiteld <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.loebner.net\/Prizef\/TuringArticle.html\" target=\"_blank\">Computing Machinery and Intelligence<\/a> om licht te werpen op de vraag<em>: <strong>Kunnen machines denken?<\/strong><\/em>. Hij bedacht daarvoor een spelvorm dat het verschil zou kunnen bepalen tussen een mens en een machine, aan de hand van een serie vragen die alleen <em><strong>&#8220;denkende&#8221; mensen<\/strong><\/em> correct zouden kunnen beantwoorden. Dit vraag &amp; antwoord spel heet sindsdien de\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.loebner.net\/Prizef\/TuringArticle.html\" target=\"_blank\">Turing Test<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#679fc0;text-align:right\" class=\"has-background\"><em>De Turing-test kan een robot of computer makkelijk winnen. Een goed voorbeeld is IBM\u2019s supercomputer Watson. Deze supercomputer was twee hoogbegaafde menselijke deelnemers&nbsp;te slim af&nbsp;tijdens een speciale editie van het Amerikaanse spelprogramma Jeopardy. Watson bleek niet verbonden te zijn met internet, maar had alle kennis op zijn harde schijf staan. Dankzij een speciaal algoritme kon Watson zeer snel informatie scannen en analyseren. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turing&#8217;s <strong style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u2018Imitatiespel\u2019<\/strong> is een veel representatiever voorbeeld van wat wordt bedoeld met AI. In dit zogenaamde <em><strong>&#8220;Chinese-room&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> gedachte-experiment zitten drie deelnemers in ge\u00efsoleerde kamers: een computer (die wordt getest), een mens en beoordeler. De (menselijke) beoordelaar kan praten met de computer en met de mens. De computer en de mens proberen de beoordelaar te overtuigen dat zij mensen zijn. Als de beoordelaar na een x-aantal vragen niet kan achterhalen wie de mens is en wie de computer is, dan wint de computer. De computer laat zien te beschikken over kunstmatige, cognitieve vaardigheden, AI dus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls poster=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chinese-room.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/The-Chinese-Room-60-Second-Adventures-in-Thought_converted.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>De term AI  werd voor het eerst gebruikt in een publicatie getiteld  <strong><em>&#8220;Proposal for the Dartmouth Summer Research Project On Artificial Intelligence&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1955\">1955<\/a>). De Amerikaanse computerwetenschapper\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/obituaries\/john-mccarthy-computer-scientist-known-as-the-father-of-ai-6255307.html\" target=\"_blank\">John McCarthy<\/a>\u00a0 bedoelde hiermee: <em><span><b>&#8220;een machine die zich zo <\/b><\/span><span><b>tot mensen verhoudt <\/b><\/span><span><span><b> zoals een <\/b><\/span><b>intelligente persoon zich zou <\/b><\/span><strong>gedragen&#8221; <\/strong><\/em>moet worden opgevat als kunstmatige intelligentie (AI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TIMELINE_ML-1024x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1413\" width=\"619\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TIMELINE_ML-1024x184.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TIMELINE_ML-300x54.jpg 300w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TIMELINE_ML-768x138.jpg 768w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TIMELINE_ML.jpg 1114w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanaf de jaren 60 in de 20ste-eeuw  gaat de ontwikkeling van computers hand in hand met de ontwikkeling van AI. De meest basale vorm van AI is data gedreven machinaal leren <em><strong>&#8212;internationaal aangeduid met het acroniem ML (Machine Learning)&#8212; <\/strong><\/em>die zich nu in een tweede bloeiperiode bevindt (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vno-ncw.nl\/standpunten\/artificial-intelligence-ai\">Taskforce AI en AINED-coalitie: Nationale Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategie, 2019<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Machine Learning (ML)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Het oorspronkelijke idee voor machinaal leren (ML) is ontstaan als een theoretisch model voor kunstmatige intelligentie dat moest verbeelden hoe neuronen in ons brein, mensen in staat stelden om een taak te leren. Dit elektronische connectionistische-model <em><strong>&#8212;perceptron&#8212;<\/strong><\/em> is bedacht door <a href=\"https:\/\/towardsdatascience.com\/a-concise-history-of-neural-networks-2070655d3fec\">neurofysioloog Warren McCulloch &amp;  wiskundige Water Pitts in 1943<\/a> en is veder uitgewerkt door Donald Hebb (1949) in zijn baanbrekende book: <strong><em>The Organization of Behaviour.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"883\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/WhatisML1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/WhatisML1.png 883w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/WhatisML1-300x122.png 300w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/WhatisML1-768x312.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 883px) 100vw, 883px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Anders dan voor het schrijven <em><strong>&#8212;coderen&#8212;<\/strong><\/em>  van traditionele computerprogramma&#8217;s &amp; apps,  heeft een computersysteem bij Machine Learning (LM)  vooraf geen geformuleerde reeks aan regels nodig die voldoen aan de syntax van een specifieke programmeertaal <em><strong>&#8212;het computerprogramma; ook wel source-code genaamd&#8212;<\/strong><\/em> die de functionaliteit coderen om van input data tot een adequate output te komen (<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1811.12808\">Rachka, 2018<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ML_LEARNING_MODEL-1024x414.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ML_LEARNING_MODEL-1024x414.png 1024w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ML_LEARNING_MODEL-300x121.png 300w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ML_LEARNING_MODEL-768x310.png 768w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ML_LEARNING_MODEL.png 1577w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"501\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/flow_chart.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/flow_chart.png 501w, https:\/\/docent.cmi.hro.nl\/willi\/HC_DATALAB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/flow_chart-300x122.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Het computersysteem leert op basis van van te voren vastgelegde leer-algoritmen <em><strong>&#8212;zogenaamde leerregels zoals backpropagation&#8212;<\/strong><\/em> uit grote hoeveelheden voorbeelddata <strong><em>&#8212;training sample&#8212;<\/em><\/strong>  zelf wat het juiste antwoord of de juiste oplossing is <em><strong>&#8212;rules&#8212;<\/strong><\/em>. Voorwaarde is dat de voorbeelddata is voorzien van  \u2018labels\u2019. Deze <strong><em>American Standard Code for Information Interchange <\/em><\/strong>is een internationale computer-standaard om letters, cijfers en leestekens <em><strong>&#8212;het alfabet&#8212;<\/strong><\/em> te laten representeren <strong><em>&#8212;lees visualiseren&#8212;<\/em><\/strong>  door computerprogramma&#8217;s zoals tekstverwerkers zodat het begrijpelijk is voor mensen die natuurlijke taal kunnen lezen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"899\" height=\"536\"
